The ammas [desert mothers] teach us to intentionally let go of all that keeps us from the single-minded pursuit of G-d: feelings and thoughts that bind us, cravings and addictions that diminish our sense of worth, and attachments to self-imposed perfectionism. Apatheia is nourished by simplicity grounded in abundance of the soul. This simplicity is in balance and harmony with the human community and the created world. To cultivate apatheia, we must be uncluttered in mind and heart and continue to be watchful and vigilant about those \u201cseeping boundaries\u201d where we can be deceived out of simplicity and into complexity under the guise of a \u201cgood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It ebbs and flows, it ebbs and flows. But what is the infinite love that unwaveringly permeates the wavering ways of our heart? And how can we reserve this inner core place within ourself that cannot be accessed by the finite because it belongs completely to G-d?\u00a0\u00a0By the way, we should even be detached from that by also being aware of our inability to practice that, because we\u2019re just a human being. We know that when we\u2019re down, we\u2019re really down. And when we\u2019re joyful, we\u2019re joyful.
